Would you steam clean your vagina?
Gwyneth Paltrow recently revealed to the world that she steam cleans her lady bits.
On her lifestyle website GOOP, the actress talks about the ultimate in spa treatments – the Mugworth V-Steam. This includes sitting on a “mini throne” where “a combination of infrared and mugwort steam cleanses your uterus”.
According to Gywnnie, it not only cleans your vagina, but balances female hormone levels. However, most medical professionals would disagree.
On the whole douching – cleaning the vagina by spraying it with a mixture of water and usually vinegar – is not recommended as it can upset the delicate balance of down below, causing infections.
Dr Jen Gunter, who recently blogged about Gywneth’s unusual treatment says “The upper and lower reproductive tracts have very intricate mechanisms for regulating local health and they are very easy to mess with. It’s a delicate garden, if you will. So one needs to be thoughtful, nay conscious about what one uses in said garden.”
Our lady bits go through a lot, but even though you may think they need a little TLC, they do a pretty good job of looking after themselves. It did get us to thinking though about what other things we’d never do to our ‘delicate garden’ – here’s our list.
4 things we’d never do to our Vajayjay
- Pierce it: If done correctly, it can be safe, but there’s always that risk that it might not go quite to plan and cause a horrible infection. And let’s not even start about the pain of the actual piercing.
- Preen it: Yes, we’re all for waxing and keeping it tidy – after all you don’t want a literal garden down there. However, there is a line to be drawn and for us that includes dying it, vajazzles and waxing it into unusual shapes. Why go to all that effort (and pain) when it’s not on show? Especially when 62% of men say they prefer a natural look down there.
- Use a vaginal deodorant: You can actually buy a deodorant for your lady bits, but as with steaming and douching, you shouldn’t go there as it will affect the levels and cause irritation or infections. If you feel like you need to freshen up, choose a wipe like Balance Activ feminine wipes, which have the same pH level as your vagina, ensuring it stays fresh without irritating it.
- Use it to lift weights: Tatyana Kozhevnikova set the unofficial vagina weightlifting record! The Russian mum broke the record by lifting over 30 pounds of weight attached to a wooden egg, which was then lifted by her vaginal muscles. Makes us feel faint just thinking about it…
