Pink Parcel Period Talk: Ali, Digital Writer

Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week a member of our very own #PPSquad will be sharing her period stories with you. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.

This week’s period talk is from Ali, our Digital Writer.

What’s your period craving?

It’s not so much what, but how much?! Just before I get my period I’m in permanent-hunger mode but I don’t always make the link. Duh. It’s only when I come on do I realise why I ate the whole world for a couple of days. I don’t have a particularly sweet tooth, so my eat-athons are always carbs, carbs, carbs. Hunks of fresh bread, bowlfuls of pasta….just keep it coming yeah.

I know my period is coming when…

I turn into the incredible sleeping woman. I can have ten-hours of shut-eye and it still doesn’t feel enough. I also make middle-of-the-day naps my friend (although that’s a weekend only activity, boo). The advice you hear is to blast that pre-menstrual lethargy with exercise but I usually can’t face it. I’d rather crawl under the duvet for a snooze. After the carbs of course.

Tell us about your first period…

It was during the long summer holidays. I’d been waiting for my period for what seemed like ages – ever since I first learnt what they were. I remember feeling super-smug when it arrived, like I was a real, grown-up woman. Being chuffed only lasted about a day and then I was horrified that bike riding, tree-climbing and all the other stuff I did as an outdoorsy twelve year old suddenly seemed so much harder (and less fun) with a huge sanitary towel in my shorts. Sigh. It took me a while to get to grips with it all.

Tell us a period cringe (we’ve all got one, hey…)

I’ve probably got a few but my most memorable cringe happened when I was working for a company that had a very large, very busy and very open reception area. I entered the building one morning and as usual, spent a minute rooting around for my pass in the bottom of my eternally messy bag. As I pulled out my fob, a load of other bits and bobs flew out too…receipts, chewing gum, and a tampon that had broken free from its paper wrapper. I  watched the ‘naked’ tampon fly through the air, bounce, roll and then settle slap bang in middle of the reception area – I dropped everything and scrambled to retrieve it with a bright red face. Of course *everyone* saw.

Your favourite thing to do when you have your period is..

Although I get my period every single month, I still believe I ‘deserve’ a little treat just for being on – like a prize for dealing with the palaver of it. This can be anything from a mini shopping splurge online to buying a huge bunch of fresh flowers just because I like the colour of them. I think it’s important to be kind to yourself when you’ve got your period and if that means self-gifting, then hurrah.
