How to apply lipstick like a beauty pro
Lipstick: nothing can change the way you feel about yourself quite like a slick of it. But it can be a bit of faff: the teeth-checking, the glass marks, the endless reapplication. Here’s how to apply your lipstick like a pro:
Prep for success
As with all make-up, you need to start with a good canvas, which means: exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! Dry lips will make it difficult to apply an even layer of lipstick as well as looking cracked and sore to others. Not the look we were going for. It’s a common problem, but it’s simple to remove dead skin. You can buy a bespoke lip scrub or try a DIY option. The simplest at-home option to smooth out lips is to use a thin layer of Vaseline and a soft toothbrush to scrub dead skin off.
Line the lip
Beauty insiders know a lip liner is a must. It stops lipstick bleeding into your foundation and provides an outline for you to work within when applying lipstick. Stick to your natural lip and try resting your hand on the mirror as you apply it if you get the shakes. You don’t need a new lip liner for each lipstick – opt for a shade similar to your natural colour or similar to the shade you’re wearing.
Get the gloss
A glossy finish will instantly plump and add definition to your lips while a matte finish is highly pigmented and therefore best for a hit of deep colour. When applying a glossy finish (like the Cougar Perfect Pout in this month’s box, dab it on with your finger rather than a brush. This will ensure the gloss stays on your lips rather than being moved around with the brush.
Make it last
While eating and drinking will rub off your hard work, we’d rather have lunch than a perfect pout, thanks. When it comes to retouching your lipstick, take the time to wipe it off with a tissue and reapply from scratch. You’ll get a much better finish than if you try to layer it on top of your old make-up.
