4 embarrassing period problems – and how to save face when they happen
We’ve all been there with a pad that leaked or a tummy that gurgles in the middle of a meeting. Your period can cause some not-so-pretty side effects – here’s how to deal with some of the most common period problems…
Uh-oh! I’ve leaked
There’s nothing more embarrassing than realising you’ve leaked onto your clothes. Even though it may not take the shame away, heavy bleeding does effect lots of women.
On your heavier days consider using a tampon and a pad. If you don’t like tampons, make sure you change your pads more frequently and always take a spare pair of pants with you. It may also be a good idea not to bust out your new white jeans during your period week…
If you do get blood on your clothes, if possible rinse immediately with cold water. Warm water will ‘set’ the blood, making it impossible to remove. Salt and toothpaste are both great blood removers, or you could try a purpose built stain remover, such as Ruby’s Red Wash, £3.95, which promises to remove all traces of blood from clothes.

Do you find yourself dashing to the loo during your period? You’re not alone.
“During periods, along with bleeding, certain chemicals called prostaglandins also get secreted and some women are more sensitive to the prostaglandins,” says Kavita Singh, Consultant Gynaecologist at BMI Priory Hospital in Birmingham.
“This can lead to can diarrhoea or excessive bowel movement which is normal during a period.”
Make sure you drink plenty of water during any bouts of diarrhoea as it can dehydrate you. Once your period finishes, so should your toilet troubles, so if it does linger, visit your GP as you may have a stomach bug.
ARRGH – I’m just so cranky!
If you suffer from mood swings prior to your period, it can really affect your quality of life.
“Minor mood swings do not need any therapy,” reassures Kavita.
However if they start affecting becoming a problem, you could try exercise or an alternative treatment, such as acupuncture to help relieve the crankiness.
“Excessive PMS can be treated in a variety of ways,” says Kavita. “Medical treatment may be hormonal like contraceptive pills to suppress ovarian function, or non-hormonal like diuretics, antidepressants tablets.”
Euck! I get disgusting night sweats
Many women get horrible night sweats just before and during their period. This is due to a drop in oestrogen levels, which can also cause anxiety and irritability.
If you’re unlucky enough to get suffer from the sweats, make sure your room is nice and cool before bedtime and try to wear light, cotton night clothes to reduce sweating as much as possible.
