Could homeopathy cure your PMS?
If you suffer from bloating, pre-period cravings or other PMS symptom, homeopathy could be just what you need.
“Homeopathy is a form of complementary healthcare that works with our natural healing process and has been used for over 200 years,” says Jo O’Flanagan, homeopath at Nelsons Homeopathic Pharmacy. “The remedies stimulate the body’s natural healing process, helping it to return to good health.”
While you can always pop a pill to help with painful periods, there are other PMS-symptoms that are not so easily chased away – and this is where homeopathy comes in. Heck, it can even help with those ‘eat 5 family-sized bag of crisps’ at once PMS cravings – as well as be an indicator of what you actually need.
“Some remedies can help deal with cravings,” says Jo. “In fact, as a homeopath it is often one of the biggest clues to a remedy that the individual needs.”
Obviously the best way to understand how homeopathic medicine can help you is to visit a registered homeopath, but Jo has passed on her wisdom and recommends these remedies for common period-related ailments.
For bloating: Lycopodium, China or Carbo Veg
For irregular periods: Sepiaor Pulsatilla
For cramps: Magnesium Phosphate tissue salts
For PMS-induced irritability and weepiness: Pulsatilla or sepia
To make sure you get the most out of homeopathy, it’s best to use a registered Homeopath. You can find one near you on Find A Homeopath, which also explains more about how homeopathy works.
It’s important to quiz your homeopath so you know they are right for you. “When deciding the homeopath you would like to visit ask questions such as ‘How long have you been practising?’ and find out if they are registered,” advises Jo.
While homeopathy isn’t for everyone, it can be a great aid – a study in Bristol discovered that 70% of those that use homeopathy experience improvements in health.
