The Make-Up Mistakes You Might Be Making When You’ve Got Your Period
It kinda sucks that when you’ve got your period, putting on make-up just doesn’t quite feel the same as other times in the month. Foundation drags over parched skin, eyes look tired no matter how much shadow you slap on and that go-to blusher just doesn’t seem to do the trick for a dull complexion. Sound familiar?
You skin changes throughout your menstrual cycle, so it may be that when you’ve got your period, your usual make-up routine needs a few tweaks too.
Here are four classic mistakes you might be making and how to fix them…
Mistake #1: Forgetting primer
A good concealer is undoubtedly a wonder-weapon in the make-up bag for covering those break-out blemishes and disguising dark circles under the eyes, but it can only do so much on its own. By using a silicone-based primer after moisturising you can reduce the appearance of fine lines and enlarged pores and create a flawless base for your foundation and concealer. Try Benefit’s The Porefessional.
Mistake #2: Using powders
Blending rather than dusting may work better for you when you’ve got your period. Due to a dip in estrogen when you come on, pre-menstrual oil slicks will be drying up and powder-based products can start caking on the skin. Yuck. So when your face is feeling less hydrated, choose cream-based blushers like Clinque’s Chubby Stick and eyeshadows such as Maybelline’s Colour Tattoo shadow– they’ll be easier to apply.
Mistake #3: Overlining the eyes
A tempting as it is to disguise knackered-looking eyes with rings of eyeliner, it can often have the opposite effect – making eyes appear heavier and smaller. Ditch the liner top and bottom and go for a highlighting shadow on your lid and lashings of mascara instead. The Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara does the trick.
Mistake #4: Under glowing
Looking like an extra from the Walking Dead? Then you’re probably under estimating the power of your blusher and bronzer right now. Complexions don’t start brightening until about a week after your period when hormone levels are on the rise again, so give dull skin a helping hand with an extra helping from your blush or bronze palette. Go glow-happy with Urban Decay’s Naked Flush.
